Powercor installs UV-C disinfection lighting at The Stoop in rugby first

The Twickenham Stoop is the home of Harlequins Rugby Club. This historic stadium, near Twickenham Stadium, boasts a capacity of around 14,800 and offers a vibrant atmosphere for rugby union matches. The Honours Bar is used as a reception and conference suite for up to 250 people, but also acted as the player’s dressing room during the COVID-19 pandemic. Powercor worked with Harlequins to protect players and spectators using the Honours bar against viruses during COVID-19 and beyond.

OUR APPROACH AND IMPACT

At the start of 2021, Harlequins became the UK’s first professional sports club to install UV-C disinfection lighting.

Harnessing the power of Philips UV-C air disinfection technology, Powercor’s fully trained staff installed 11 upper air disinfection units in the Honours Bar at The Stoop to ensure the welfare of players and supporters in the battle against the spread of COVID-19.

The players were the first to benefit from the new safety measures with the bar was serving as the teams’ dressing room at the time due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Each disinfection unit is suspended by brackets 800mm from the ceiling. The system disinfects air as it circulates the room, even when there are people present below. Natural convection moves the disinfected air back into the lower part of the room. In laboratory testing, Signify’s UV-C light sources reduced SARSCoV-2 virus infectivity on a surface to below detectable levels in as few as ten seconds.

While the system will safeguard the players during the pandemic, it is subsequently providing protection for the club’s members to the present day.
