PROJECT:
Gatwick Airport, Crawley
Intelligent Voltage Optimisation improves Gatwick’s sustainability
Over the past 60 years, Gatwick has grown from just 186,000 passengers to over 40 million passengers. The busiest single runway airport in Europe, Gatwick has two runways whcih can’t be used at the same time due to their proximity. Passengers are managed through two terminals: North and South, both of which have 31 stands each, with an additional 57 remote stands served by coaches. The ability to use a stand flexibly means Gatwick can park up to 186 planes.

OUR APPROACH AND IMPACT
Powercor was commissioned to work with iVolt to install two No. 800Amp iVolt® Intelligent Voltage Optimisation Units at the South Terminal’s arrivals and departures to improve overall sustainability and also achieve energy-cost savings in excess of 10%.
The units Powercor fitted to the site at Gatwick Airport Ltd (GAL) are now enjoying a reduction on Carbon output of 147.9 metric tonnes – a significant reduction in both energy consumption and costs.
The project was undertaken as part of an LV upgrade and consisted of 2x 800A/528 kVA units installed on C1 & C2 section of the South Terminal. C1 & C2 has an annual consumption of 3,597,000 kWh. The savings on C1 are averaging 11% and the savings on C2 are averaging 9.6%. In total over 10% reduction in kWh consumption is being seen which represents savings of over £35,000 per annum.
Powercor worked alongside Environ, Graden Services and iVolt to ensure there was minimal disruption and that the stringent Health and Safety policies and statements were adhered to. The installation was faultless from start to finish.
Powercor’s team of eight engineers prepared, installed, connected, tested and inspected the complete installation. The job was over seen by the Construction Terminal Projects Team at GAL to ensure compliance to their terms of business.
