PROJECT:

Tonbridge School, Kent

Tonbridge School improves sustainability producing over 305 MWh of energy, leading to a saving of £80K annually.

Founded in 1553, Tonbridge School is one of the UK’s leading independent boarding schools. Set within an inspiring 150-acre campus, they provide education to over 800 boys aged 13 to 18. Powercor was selected to install a solar array on their sports complex.

OUR APPROACH AND IMPACT

Powercor undertook a comprehensive project at Tonbridge School with the primary objective of significantly enhancing the school’s sustainability credentials and reducing its carbon emissions. This was achieved through the design, installation, and commissioning of a state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic (PV) system, aligning closely with the school’s ambitions to embrace renewable energy and reduce reliance on grid-supplied electricity.

A core aim of the initiative was to decrease the school’s dependence on the national electricity grid by generating clean energy on-site. This transition not only supports carbon reduction goals but also positions the school for long-term energy cost savings. Powercor responded to this challenge by designing a bespoke SolarEdge PV system. The system was meticulously tailored to fit the unique architectural features of the school while maximising energy generation based on specific building characteristics.

The solution was engineered to meet Tonbridge School’s defined energy targets, playing a critical role in progressing towards its broader sustainability objectives. To ensure a smooth implementation, Powercor managed the entire project lifecycle. This included securing the necessary Distribution Network Operator (DNO) connection agreements, ensuring the system’s seamless integration into the existing infrastructure.

Powercor also carried out the full installation of the system, adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety. The commissioning process was managed in close coordination with the appropriate regulatory bodies to confirm compliance and operational readiness. The project was delivered punctually and within budget, demonstrating Powercor’s commitment to excellence in execution and client satisfaction.

Following a competitive tender process, we appointed Powercor to install solar panels at our sports complex, the Tonbridge School Centre. Powercor delivered this project on budget and ahead of schedule, working very effectively with our own multi-disciplinary team on site.

I have been particularly impressed with the commitment Chris and his team have evidenced to provide outstanding customer service and manage the complexities of delivering a project on a busy site. The results are outstanding, saving the School money whilst supporting our wider sustainability plans for the future.

I am looking forward to a continued partnership with Powercor as we look ahead to further investments in solar power across our site.
