Electric Car Chargers – What is all the hype?

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular and as an electrical contractor we are being asked to incorporate electric car charging points into more installations especially new build properties

So what is all the hype?

Quiet and Quick

It only takes one ride in a battery-powered car to understand the improved ride quality of an electric car compared to a vehicle using a petrol / diesel engine.
An electric car is very quiet and very smooth. As soon as you push the accelerator power is delivered immediately to the wheels, providing an exhilarating driving experience.

Home Recharging

Imagine never going to a petrol station again!!!

All you need to do is pull into your drive / garage and plug the car into the electric car charger.

It’s very convenient and takes all of about 15 seconds. When you get up the next morning, your car ready to go another 80 to 100 miles—or longer, depending on the make / model of the car.

Cheaper to Operate

Electricity is cheaper than Petrol / Diesel. Given the considerable efficiency of electric cars compared to internal combustion models, the cost per mile to fuel an electric car is approximately one-third to one-quarter the cost of Petrol / Diesel (on a cost per mile basis). And because electric cars don’t have exhaust systems and don’t need oil changes, maintenance costs are massively reduced.

No Tailpipe Emissions

Nearly all credible researchers believe that electric cars, have a smaller environmental impact than conventional vehicles. In regions with a strong grid mix of renewables—such as hydro, wind and solar—or for electric car drivers with home solar, the emissions benefits are dramatic. You can expect some analysts to argue the opposite.

Electric cars don’t have an exhaust and therefore don’t pollute the air with nasty emissions creating a nicer cleaner environment.

How much do they cost?

Electric car chargers can range in price based on what you require.

If you want a built in unit you could be looking at something between £300-£600 and labour to install.

However most new build properties are now including these into garages as standard.

Current projects

We here at Powercor are currently involved in pricing & securing a large contract for a well known car parking company at all there sites around the UK, as they are on board with the increased demand to supply electric charging facilities for their regular customers.

We also now install electric car charging points in our large house developments and are currently promoting this need to all our own clients
