Smart Controls for Smart Installations

At Powercor we have been looking to broaden our technical horizon. Lighting controls are one of the areas that we have been looking into.

Whilst we already offer a full controls service, it is an opportunity for some of us with less experience to expand our knowledge on the subject.

Controls cover all areas of Electrical, Mechanical and Life Safe Systems. They manage to integrate seamlessly, weather you want different scenes for your lighting or you want your exterior lighting to turn on at dusk and off at dawn, it’s covered. If you need to shut down the HVAC-system when the fire alarm sounds, all this can be taken care of with a few lines of code.

The two systems we have been looking at are Phillips Dynalite and Eaton’s iLight system. We have attended training courses with AWE Europe Ltd for Dynalite training and Eaton’s office in Watford for ilight training. Both courses were hugely rewarding for all of us involved and gave us the chance to dip our toe in to the world of controls.

The software packages are very similar in their layout and their processes, where Dynalite has a very handy feature to set your areas on top of a live drawing, the ilight package has some very neat shortcuts already built in for some of the more advanced programming options.

They both offer a wide range of user interfaces to suit the needs of the end user, from simple buttons to touch screen user interfaces. These interfaces can be programmed to control all functions in your home or business, from lights, curtains, gates, to  extract systems,  it is a truly versatile option. If you can think of something that can require control, it can be controlled.

We are always looking to extend our knowledge base and get as much of that knowledge spread through our engineers as possible to give them a better understanding of the systems that are out there.
