Apprentices – Managing your 1st project

Dan Walton has worked for Powercor for just over 2 years and is currently a 3rd year apprentice, attending Bracknell College with JTL Training.

Dan has been trusted & responsible for most of the electrical work carried out at our new premises, making sure that everything was completed on time, ready for everyone to move in.

Dan is a very successful apprentice, ready and willing for new challenges. He has 6 months left at College alongside an AM2 examination and portfolio to complete. Dan will complete his apprenticeship over the next 15-18 months.

How long have you worked for Powercor & how did you get the job?

I have worked for Powercor for almost 2 and a half years now – I got the job just after i left school and i heard about Powercor through my father.

What’s the best & worst parts about being an Apprentice?

The best part of being a apprentice is the learning side and at the same time I’m earning money – The worst part  is getting used to the early mornings.

You have been heavily involved in the new Powercor offices – What exactly have you been able to get involved in?

I have been involved in a few different things e.g. Intercom Systems, CCTV, and even the Alarm System.

Did you have to work with other trades?

I did have to work with other trades and this was a big thing for me, as i was the only member of Powercor on site. Tradesmen would be asking me questions and as an apprentice i had to step up and do as well as i possible could.

How did you cope with the pressure & responsibility given to you on this project?

I handled the pressure & responsibility by keeping my head down and doing what i thought was best.

If you could, would there be anything about your work on this project which you would change?

I wouldn’t change anything about my work. I am sure some people have different ways of doing some things, but i completed everything to the best of my ability.

What’s the biggest thing you have learnt whilst working on the new offices?

The one thing I have improved on is my people skills – How to instruct people of a greater age or more experience whilst not coming across rude, patronising, degrading or belittling to the person you are dealing with.

What do you think of the new offices, now everyone is moved?

The offices look a lot smaller now everyone is moved in. I’m still very happy & proud of the work I have done.

How do you see your role changing in the future with Powercor?

I would like to see myself climb the ladder and one day progress to the top alongside Technicians such as John Scott & Kyle Philips.

Working within our Apprenticeship scheme, Dan has excelled at all tasks given to him. He has been able to show real maturity and knowledge, taking ownership of tasks given to him and completing them to deadline.

Managing the works at our New Offices meant that Dan really had to step up and show everyone what he is capable of – Dan more than succeeded and we have no concerns that Dan will become a great Electrician and one day strive to be a Powercor Technician.
